Books are great tools for learning and there have been many I have read that have helped me to make positive changes in my life. So I thought I would share with you my top 4 reads which I find could be beneficial to any open mind reader.
1. Way of The Peaceful Warrior (A book that changes lives) by Dan Millman
This is a book about an unfulfilled world champion gymnast (Dan Millman) who is awakened one night by a vivid dream and wonders into an all-night petrol station to stumble across an old man (Socrates) who teaches him the ‘way of the peaceful warrior’. Through different practices, insights and interesting journeys Dan Millman Sees the world in a more positive light and his life is changed for the better forever.
This is one of my most recent reads but is possibly one of the best I’ve read so far. I’ve never been quite so captivated by a book and can easily see how it is ‘A book that changes lives’.
2. The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
Eckhart Tolle is a renowned spiritual teacher. In this book, he focuses on the power
of living fully in the present moment and how this practice can help you to live a more peaceful and direct experience of life. This book can really help transform your thinking and allow you to dissolve your psychological pain by surrendering to what is and not mentally projecting what you think should be.
I found this a very powerful book which has certainly helped me to eliminate a lot of mental resistance in my life and helped me to enjoy the journey of things instead of always wanting to be at the ‘illusory’ destination. I feel we all could benefit from having more mental clarity and not being consistently haunted by our thoughts 24/7.
3. Mindfulness – A practical guide to finding peace in a frantic world by Mark Williams and Danny Penman
This was the first book I read when I stumbled across the practice of mindfulness a few years ago, it was handed to me by a good friend who is also a psychologist and I don’t think it could’ve been a better place to start to gain an understanding of mindfulness. By reading this it gave me a better understanding of concepts and ideas in many of the other books I have read which have some relation to mindful living.
It talks about why we attack ourselves and also has an 8 Week Mindfulness programme full of great ideas and practices you can follow to give you a better understanding of your mind and help free yourself from any stress and anxieties you may have. This book is written in a way which is very easy to follow and understand without much fancy terminology. Having a programme to follow as you read is a great way to quickly incorporate the powerful practice of mindfulness. A DVD is also included which has many audio mindfulness meditations for you to follow along with. Personally, I found these meditations hugely beneficial to helping me become more self-aware and not get carried with my thoughts and feelings, I still use some of these daily.
4. A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle
This is another great book written by Eckhart Tolle, following on from the previous book I mentioned above, The Power of Now. This book focuses on looking at the human’s false sense of self (the Ego). Something I had been very unaware of until I found and read this book. Eckhart talks about identifying the Ego and gaining a better understanding of it to help break free from it in order to create A New Earth and a more conscious life. Other chapters in this book also cover things such as, Your inner purpose, Finding who you truly are and discovery of your inner space. All of which I have found extremely helpful on my Journey to Self Actualisation and understanding.
I have managed to learn a lot by reading and applying the techniques/ concepts in these books, they have made me a lot more aware of my self and the world around me and have helped me to eliminate a lot of unnecessary stress and anxiety in my life. I hope that you may also be able to gain a clearer insight into life after reading this books.
